It is definitely a challenge to design a study that maximizes the data that is collected through the research but also accounts for the weaknesses of the specific research design. Some researchers have suggested minimizing social desirability bias with specific techniques. Indirect questioning can reduce some forms of social desirability bias (Fisher, 1993).
Training of survey adminstrators can also reduce this specific type of bias (Grimm, 2010). In a meta-analysis of bias-reduction techniques, Nederhof found seven techniques for structuring the actual survey that can help and also found that it can also be successful to include bias-detecting measures (2006). At this point you should be narrowing in on potential topics for your dissertation. The specifics may not be targeted but you should know the general area you wish to research. Using the topic area you are considering, explain how the measurement concepts discussed in the text and readings could be used in your research. Why is it important to know the variables within your research study? What type of measurement instrument might you use for your study? Explain the benefits and possible drawbacks of the potential instrument.
According to Babbie, I have identified a social research problem (quality training using feedback) that others could benefit or build upon (p. 17, 2011). My dissertation measurement concepts will be definitely incorporating one of several methods with one absolutely being the Likert scale. Through reading and research the Likert-type response formats consistently found substantial scores inflation associated with socially desirable responding (Stark, et. al., 2014). This could potentially be a variable but with clear, concise and concrete instructions I should be able to control how subjects fill them out. The drawback from this type of data will be the human factor: willingness to accurately fill the questionnaire. The majority of the inputted data acquire will come from these qualitative formatted questionnaires. However, being able to collect the data on a systematic basis will be a benefit to my research. During my statistic class, I found several methods of crunching information into useable format and being able to demonstrate the correlation of the data collected. The some of the variables will be men and women and different diversities to name a few. But variables such as previous work experience, time of year, course and instructors will be included in the research.
