Meaning of words: • Skills: are there particular personal characteristics needed by the entrepreneur? What do Mitchell & Shepherd (2010) and your textbook say? • Business model template: consistent with your text, there is not one standard business model, you should research to find a suitable model for your business. • Business plan: the textbook outlines the structure of the plan, you will notice that there are many elements to the plan. Do not incorporate a feasibility analysis in this plan. • Justification of the elements: as indicated there are many different model templates and many elements to the plan. You might not include them all. Why have you made this choice? • Sustainability and growth: what are your strategies for growing the enterprise beyond the initial start-up phase? • Pitch typically takes the form of an entrepreneur presenting or describing the business idea to prospective investors. Examples of these can be found at the end of many chapters of the textbook and on the Moodle site. Every member of your group must participate in the pitch. • Minimum number of references: if you only use 18-20 references you will receive 1 out of 2 marks. • APA referencing system: you must only use this referencing system in the body of the essay and in the reference list at the end. Ensure you familiarise yourself with it! • Report structure: this will include an executive summary, table of contents, body, references, and appendices and is discussed later. • Conventions of academic writing: this is quite a formal style of writing discussed later. Marking criteria (ability to): 1. Critically analyse and synthesise the knowledge, qualities and skills needed to become a successful entrepreneur in start-up ventures 2. Synthesise knowledge and exercise critical thinking to apply appropriate frameworks that evaluate the preferred business model for the start-up opportunity 3. Appropriate writing conventions • Must be within the word limit (first word of introduction to last word of the conclusion). • Write in paragraph form with full sentences. A paragraph is more than one sentence. • Introduce a new topic in a new paragraph, don’t write overly long paragraphs. • Make the first or last sentence the topic sentence of the paragraph. • Write using formal academic language and specific innovation, entrepreneurship, and start-ups words, theories, concepts and terms. • Avoid using casual conversational language. For example, instead of writing “it’s a good idea to think about . . .” write “an important consideration is . . ” • Write in the third person not using “I”, “we”, “one”, “he/she”. However, it is acceptable to use I in the ‘pitch’.
